The urban renewal project for the Txabarri-El Sol ARI (Integrated Reuse Area) in the EU1 neighbourhood, planned and directed by KREAN for the Department of Housing and Urban Agenda of the Basque Government. It is the result of years of work in infrastructure, urban planning, architecture and urban planning consultancy. The scope of the reform has included rehousing, demolition of buildings and the urbanisation and construction of 78 homes.
The latest work has consisted of the execution of the last two phases of UE1 of the ARI Txabarri-El Sol, and are the culmination of a long process of work on an urban regeneration project in which, faced with the possibility that the space created would become a marginal area, the aim has been to create a space that helps to strengthen social ties and a sense of belonging to the neighbourhood. In addition, the aim has been to avoid competing with other urban spaces in the area, with teenagers in mind as potential users. A bouldering wall and bleachers have been built in the square to allow for outdoor activities, with open Wi-Fi, and a space dedicated to neighbourhood activities that also has outdoor space in the square itself. The space also allows for the possibility of opening terraces to the bars and cafes located there.
On the other hand, the project resolves the accessibility between the upper and lower parts of the neighbourhood by means of two lifts, an improvement that aims to promote the revitalisation of the neighbourhood and boost its economic activity. The utmost care has been taken in the study of the routes, creating wide views, and paying special attention to the lighting design, so that the result enhances and boosts the attractiveness of the new space.
It is worth mentioning that during the course of the works, an old cave was uncovered, the ‘black cave’, which served as an air-raid shelter during the Civil War.
