Zadorra river flood defence

THE PROJECT
Zadorra river flood defence
LOCATION
Gamarra Mayor, Álava

The purpose of the project is to build a flood channel downstream of the Gamarra Mayor bridge in order to increase the drainage section. In addition, a raised area is EIBng built along the left bank of the river Zadorra with a double purpose: hydraulic, protecting the urban areas in the area from the 500-year return period flood of the river Zadorra, and environmental, eliminating the acoustic and visual impact that road traffic generates on the adjacent green area..

A flood channel has been created downstream of the Gamarra Mayor bridge, with the aim of increasing the river's drainage section and thus reducing the flood level both in this section and in the section immediately upstream. In addition, a green space integrated into the Zadorra river park is being prepared for public use, giving continuity to the pedestrian and cycle routes that form part of the city's Green Belt.

Once the double flood channel was built, protective mounds were constructed along the flood plain on the left bank of the river Zadorra, with a dual purpose: to contain the sheet of water in floods with a long return period (500 years), and to reduce the acoustic and visual impact that vehicle traffic along Avenida del Zadorra generates in the adjacent green area.

In addition, the project included the construction of a green area on the right bank of the riverbed, the regeneration of a landscape in an area currently degraded by the uncontrolled dumping of inert waste and a network of pedestrian paths, among other measures.
