KREAN has offset in 2023 the carbon footprint of 2022 through a CO2 absorption project recognised by the Spanish Office for Climate Change (OECC). Thanks to the management of the company CO2 Revolution, 182 Tn of CO2 equivalent have been offset within the BORELA project (OECC 2021-b158).
Located in the parish of Borela, municipality of Cerdedo - Cotobade, Pontevedra, an area of 193.58 acres has been reforested through the manual planting of up to six different native species. The Borela region was devastated by fire in 2006, 2016 and 2017. The last of these burned 75 acres .
The project, promoted by CO2 Revolution, began in August 2021 and will enable the reforestation of 1,170 acres , recovering a burnt land, restoring degraded soil to create a biodiverse forest mass and protecting the habitat, soil and landscape.
In addition, the project has a social component, 80% of the people employed belong to vulnerable groups and 50% are women from rural areas.
This action is part of KREAN's Decarbonisation Plan, a plan that has enabled a 60% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2022 compared to the cooperative's emissions levels in 2009.
Similarly, the emissions per person indicator has been reduced by 65% in 2022 compared to the cooperative's 2009 indicator.
This initiative answers to KREAN's commitment to achieve international, regional and local mitigation targets, for which it is developing decarbonisation plans for the industrial, tertiary and commercial, food & beverage, hotel and retail sectors as part of its professional services activity.
